is a Japanese martial art that translates as “the way of the empty hand”. On the surface, karate is about using the body through punching, kicking, striking, and blocking without the use of weapons. However, karate is much more than that, it is an art of discipline that focuses on training the mind, body, and spirit.
(1868–1957), the founder of Shotokan karate, introduced karate to mainland Japan in the early 20th century. Born in Okinawa, he trained under masters like Anko Itosu, adapted karate for wider appeal, and emphasized its philosophical aspects. He named his style Shotokan, authored Karate-Do Kyohan, created the "Dojo Kun" principles, and formalized the belt system and kata. His work globalized karate, leaving a lasting legacy.
