While no karate class is ever the same, karate classes include common elements, including warm up, kihon, kata, kumite, and cool-down.
Kihon practice involves varying levels of techniques and combination practice with the class using punching, kicking, striking, and blocking techniques in a variety of stances. Kihon practice allows for detailed focus on proper execution.
Kata are a series of pre-arranged movements in which a person defends themselves against multiple imaginary attackers. Each movement in a Kata is a self-defense technique against a potential attacker. We practice 26 katas in Shotokan karate.
